October is Employee Appreciation and Allergy Awareness Month!

Employee Appreciation Month

During this month, please help us thank our dedicated staff who care for and love your pets!! We have a great team at Hockessin! We are family! In addition, we want to thank you for being a part of our family!

If there is an employee that you feel really cares about you and your pet, please let them know you appreciate them.

Allergy Awareness Month

Did you know that cats, dogs and horses can all develop allergies in much the same way that humans do? There are three main kinds of allergy in animals – food, flea bites and environmental allergies such as grass pollen and mold spores.

Environmental allergies, or atopy, are the second-most common cause of itchy skin in dogs, after flea allergy dermatitis. Although it is hard to know exactly how many dogs suffer from atopy, recent studies estimate the prevalence at about 10 percent of the canine population. Cats can also suffer from environmental allergies.

Just as people can be allergic to certain foods, so can pets. A food allergy in a dog or cat results most typically from a protein in the food. Food allergies typically cause skin issues in dogs and cats, but vomiting and diarrhea can occur, too. Treatment involves removing the offending ingredient from the pet’s diet. Finding the offender usually involves a process of elimination.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from allergies, please contact us and make an appointment with one of our veterinarians for an evaluation.
