Five Guidelines for Ensuring Safe Swimming with Your Pet

As the summer heat rises, you and your beloved companion may seek relief by taking a refreshing swim. However, not all dogs—or pets, for that matter—are natural swimmers, so it’s important to take proper precautions when swimming with your four-legged friend. Here are five tips to ensure your pet’s safety during swimming adventures.

#1: Provide access to fresh drinking water

When your thirsty pet enters a pool or any body of water, they may unknowingly consume water contaminated with chemicals or other pollutants. Always make sure to offer plenty of fresh drinking water to quench your pet’s thirst before and after swimming.

#2: Equip your pet with a life vest

If your pet will be in deep water, it is wise to have them wear a life vest in addition to relying on their swimming abilities. Allow your pet to try on the vest before entering the water, giving them time to become accustomed to wearing it.

#3: Never leave your pet unattended in the water

Pets can become frightened and distressed when left alone in the water. Always keep a vigilant eye on your furry companion while they are swimming to ensure their safety.

#4: Teach your pet how to exit the pool

In the event that your pet accidentally falls into the pool while you’re not present, they may struggle to find a way out without assistance. Ensure that there are stable stairs or an exit ramp that your pet can use to easily climb out of the pool, and make sure they are familiar with how to use them.

#5: Rinse your pet after swimming

Chemicals, pathogens, and debris can accumulate in your pet’s dense fur after a dip in a pool or lake. To prevent your pet from ingesting these contaminants while grooming, thoroughly rinse their fur after swimming.

Accidents can happen around bodies of water, especially if your furry friend leans in for a drink without knowing how to swim. If your pet experiences a water-related emergency this summer, don’t hesitate to contact our team for assistance.
